Caring For Your Leather Products

At the end of the day, it is all about personal preference for you and your fur-baby. Lulu does wear these collars to the beach and in creeks and they do get a little wet, def dirty + sandy. She rolls in dead things + sea-weed, often coating the collars (getting into the grooves of the braiding) and her collars will withstand all of this BUT she doesn't get them soaking wet [she doesn't swim often], I don't allow her to pull on the wet collar, and I care for them afterwards.

The info below will help you either keep it in tip-top condition or, you will keep it useable, for as long as possible, if it is an all-occasion collar, like Lulu wear's them.

Leather + Water Do Not Mix:

Our leather-goods are not designed or intended for wear in water, particularly leather items with embossing. The leather will most likely stretch and deform, if it becomes wet. Embossing may be lost altogether if worn in water. Also, colours may bleed (leading to staining of your doggo'd fur if it is lighter in colour) and all colours of leather will change, if regularly worn in the water. Prolong the life this item by keeping it out of water. In saying this though, Lulu wears hers in water and we make these products using high quality hardware (solid brass + stainless steel - both rust-proof). They will withstand the occasional quick or accidental dip but make sure you follow the instructions below if it does become wet.

If your item becomes wet, do not to let your dog pull as it will stretch + thin out. Once dry, it will still be strong but it won't got back to its smaller size.

Should your item become wet, pat the item dry with a clean dry cloth and allow the item to dry at room temperature, out of sunlight + heat, on a flat surface. Once fully dry, condition the collar.

Cleaning Dirt and Stains:

Should this item become dirty, clean the leather with a soft, dry cloth. If the mark does not budge, try a damp cloth.

If the stain is super tough [eg grease], you can use eucalyptus oil on a clean cloth or cotton pad to remove the mark or stain. This generally works however rubbing the stain too hard may result in removal of the dyes which colour this leather. We recommend that you test a small spot first. You may also have to clean the whole item. Please do not leave the eucalyptus oil around for your dog to get into as it is poisonous if ingested! But in saying that, it is very safe to clean the collar with. Allow the item to dry at room temperature, out of sunlight, on a flat surface.

Conditioning & Protection:

Once the item is dry, give it a coating for protection & conditioning. Obviously, we would recommend you use the Conditioner we make in house. Otherwise, if you have a clear leather conditioner like Dubbin, use that - easily picked up at the supermarket. Allow to absorb then polish/buff off any excess with a clean, dry cloth. You can condition the leather with quality household oils - olive oil, coconut oil etc. However, using oils will quickly deepen the colour, as it absorbs the oil.

Hardware

We use only solid brass + stainless steel hardware. Occasionally when we order these items, they are a little stiff in use. We simply use a touch of WD-40 on the item to get it moving smoothly again. We recommend that you do the same if you notice this happening to the hardware.

We reccommned that you keep your hardware in great working order by following these steps!

Firstly, remove any dirt or grit build-up that might be in the joint by tapping the hardware against something hard [metal tap/wood/benchtop etc], then run it under tap water to flush the joint, pat dry. Then give it a spray of WD-40 (away from your dog) and a wiggle to loosen up the joint. Be sure to wipe away all excess spray with a paper towel or cloth. You can grab a can of WD-40 at the supermarket, hardware store, kmart or auto stores.

All up, this will take less about a whole minute. We have a video showing these steps HERE

Woollen Products

General Instructions for Use + Cleaning:

  • Our woollen items are not designed for use in water.

  • We would not recommend over-washing any of our woollen products - for blankets, give it a good shake, remove hair with a lint roller [or even gentle vacuum].

  • Clean stains immediately. Most of the time a dry, damp cloth will do the trick. Otherwise, we use a dab of eucalyptus oil on a clean, dry cloth to spot clean the mark;

  • Wash heavily soiled blankets by placing them in the washing machine on a cold woollen or gentle cycle and gently hand wash any other woollen items in luke warm water with a wool-safe detergent [we prefer to use eucalyptus oil - about a tablespoon - which is absolutely fine for your pet BUT make sure they never have access to the open bottle];

  • Woollen items can be laid flat on a clean, dry towel, to dry;

  • Store blankets in a cool dark place when not in use [HINT: Cedar wood + shavings will deter moth's - make sure it is kept fresh];

  • Never use harsh chemicals on your wool items, even if you have a stubborn stain. Never scrub the wool. Take your wool to a dry cleaner if there’s a stain that you can’t handle with gentle treatment.

Velour - Sweeter-Sweater

Necklaces!

We make these necklaces using a simple slip-knot so that you can keep this necklace riding high. Should this knot loosen and need to be re-tied, follow the instructions found on this page.
